My review of "Interview With a Contract Killer"
This was undoubtedly the best crime novel i've read all year. A completely original idea, very well written with great attention to detail and an ending that came from nowhere. 5/5 all the way

My review of "Interview With a Contract Killer"
My signed copies of both books arrived on Monday last week and I am now half way through the second, Oh boy can this guy write. I've read almost all the reviews and all I can say is believe the hype. I've never read a book like it. the twists and turns in the plots kept me riveted and I swear i felt for some of the characters, they were so real that they were jumping off the page. This needs to be turned into a tv series or a movie.I haven't finished book 2 and already looking forward to book 3 so keep us posted..

My review of "Interview With a Contract Killer"
To say I loved this book would be an understatement. A truly original story, very well devised and written. Characters were beautifully built up and stages well set and detailed. The story was made all the more interesting by the stark contrast in life styles of the two main characters.
Nothing in the run up could have prepared me for the ending.
I am about to start reading Divided Loyalties and am hoping for more of the same.
If you only read one crime thriller novel this year, this should be it.

What a fantastic book!

David Palmer and Frankie Cole are such brilliant characters. The story is original and very well written. in a Mindhunter-esque fashion and, on the face of it, the story is well-conceived and generally well-written.

Normally, I don't appreciate flashbacks in a novel but they work really well here and give us a solid and entertaining account of Cole's past life.

This book is full of great twists and turns! The ending floored me - I wasn't expecting it at all!

A must read for any crime fiction fans!

My review of: "Interview With a Contract Killer"

Having read many of the reviews prior to buying it, I was worried in case this novel didn't live up to expectation. I was more than happy to be proved wrong. What a journey this was, a story which goes in to a great deal of detail regarding the life of a London gangster and his own struggles while in Broodmoor. This book is a real roller coaster with many twists and turns. I highly recommend it.

My review of: "Interview With a Contract Killer" Having been born in London and living here my whole life it was very easy for me to identify with the characters and locations in this book. It really felt like the story was real with none of that BBC Londoner, plumb in the mouth which let's down so many books. I loved the style of writing and I'm really looking forward to the next installment.

My review of: "Interview With a Contract Killer"

Where to start? This book is excellent with a cast of well developed and "believable" characters who move the reader through cleverly planned and thought out plots which will hold your interest right up to the end which I have to say was truly unexpected. Without doubt I highly recommend this novel to all crime fiction lovers and if able would, without hesitation award it five stars

My review of 'Interview With a Contract Killer':
I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend and I was not disappointed. The more I read the more I wanted to find out what happened next. The settings were very well explained and the characters were so believable that I felt I was watching it all as it happened. This novel will be hard to better. I want to read more from this author.

Goodreads review: 08 / 03 / 2020

It has been my pleasure to read the first novel by Nathan Rivers "Interview with a Contract Killer". I was engrossed with the life story of 'Mr Cole' - a Broadmoor patient as revealed to David Palmer - a freelance journalist. The series of interviews are a clever framing device as Frankie Cole reveals the grisly secrets of his career to Palmer in the presence of two deferential and rather timid hospital warders/guards. Cole has been transferred from Belmarsh prison after murdering a guard. There is a sensitive contrast between the world of privilege represented by the Ascot Hotel, where Palmer stays between interviews, and the world created for the 'lost souls' within the walls of Broadmoor. To say more would be to give too much away, but I really enjoyed this ingenious novel and look forward to more from Nathan Rivers.

Short Review

A gritty, gangland gripper with an incredible twist – a crime lovers must-read!

Review

I loved this book.  It’s as simple as that.  David Palmer comes to Broadmoor to interview Frankie Cole in a Mindhunter-esque fashion and, on the face of it, the story is well-conceived and generally well-written.  It starts off with Palmer’s journey over to Broadmoor from Wales where he lives.  I always think it is nice when authors include the rest of the UK in their books, not just London (there is more to our great country you know).  A rapport is built between Palmer and Cole slowly and the reader is allowed the time to understand their relationship.  The book is filled with flashbacks to Cole’s heyday in the East End of London and this forms the basis of the interview.  He recounts his tales working for some eminent gangsters and how he ended up in his position.  These vignettes, in themselves, prove enough on their own, to keep the reader interested.

Initially, I thought this was just a fairly good book – murder, corruption and gangsters are the usual suspects.  No problems with the plot and it kept my attention.  A twist about halfway through provided enough impetus for me to want to read on but nothing prepared me for the shock finale.  The final chapter proved to be the most captivating and I actually read this twice.  Not because I didn’t understand it but because I wanted to re-live the moment when the author so beautifully shatters your conceptions of the story.  I don’t think I have ever read a book with such a shocking twist so very near the end.  What an absolute curveball!  There’s always the risk that the twist is underplayed or feels like an ‘it was all a dream’ moment when the reveal is very late-on but Rivers doesn’t fall into this trap.  You can tell care has been taken to lead up to this climax and the reader feels nothing but fulfilment.

What I liked

The final twist was, of course, my highlight.  I did not see this coming one bit and it completely blindsided me.  I absolutely love books that do this.  Rivers develops Palmer as a main character well and I’m hoping to learn more about his background in the next book.

What I wasn’t so keen on

There were a fair few typographical errors and I also felt that some sentences were too long, lasting half a page in one case.  I didn’t find these small issues to detract from the overall readability of the book.  This is, indeed, the only reason I have not given it the full five stars.

Summary

For a first-time author (as I believe Rivers to be), this is an excellent piece of work.  It has all the elements a great crime story needs and Rivers excels, particularly, in providing sucker-punching, jaw-dropping plot twists.  I can’t wait to read the next instalment.

As an avid reader of crime fiction, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. Not only was the dialogue between the two main characters very well thought out and maintained but the sheer number of different plots contained within the book kept me wanting more. I loved this book from the first page to the last. The tension between characters, the detail described in the different locations. I felt I was there watching it all going on before my eyes.It had its grissly moments but these were cleverly mixed with romantic encounters. It really did have it all.

My review of "Divided Loyalties"
Another excellent read from a very talented author. It was good that some major characters from the first in this series were brought back for this instalment. The ending certainly didn't have the same punch as the first but the author still managed to keep me wanting to read more. A well thought out plot with plenty of detail and background. Everything a good crime thriller should be.

Divided Loyalties takes place in a good few years before Interview but is just as gripping and exciting as its predecessor. Danny Slade has been sold a story about his brother’s suicide which he cannot stomach – something isn’t right here. The book follows his journey to get to the bottom of his brother’s death and takes us through infamous South London crime hotspots. There’s lots of action, a bit of gore and some romance thrown in for good measure.

Although this book doesn’t feature a twist quite like that in Interview, I found the general pace of the book more reader-friendly and kept my attention throughout. Given we have just had our first child and we are currently in the middle of a pandemic, it says something about Rivers writing that I continued to want to read this, despite limited time and growing fatigability. It was a welcome distraction!

Once again Nathan, I salute you for your efforts here and can award no less than five stars! I look forward to book 3.

My review of "Divided Loyalties" This book is all about one man's search for the truth and having to revisit his past to find it. As a gangster novel it has all the required elements to hold your interest. I quickly became a fan of Rivers work after reading his debut novel Interview with a contract killer which had me enthralled and I am pleased to say that this, his second novel pulled me in in the same way. Excellent, believable characters with a fantastic plot and not forgetting that all important twist. I have no hesitation in awrding this work 5*

My review of "Divided Loyalties" After reading River's first book Interview with a contract killer, I was certain his second couldn't be as immersive but boy was I wrong. This book blew me away and if River's agent hasn't got this under the nose of Guy Ritchie he or she should be sacked.
